Vitamin B Complex Benefits: Why Your Energy Metabolism Relies on Eight Vitamins

Vitamin B Complex Benefits: Why Your Energy Metabolism Relies on Eight Vitamins

Vitamin B complex benefits start with a simple fact: a vitamin B complex is not one nutrient but a team of eight vitamins that work side by side in your body. They help turn the food you eat into energy your cells can use.

This guide explains what each part of the team does, and what the research says. You will also see which statements about B vitamins are officially authorised and what is in Glow25 Energy.

In short: Vitamins B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12 contribute to normal energy metabolism and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. B2, B3, B6 and B12 also contribute to normal nervous system function. Studies on single B vitamins in people without a deficiency are limited and partly mixed, while trials with a whole B complex have shown benefits for endurance and for how stressed and tired people feel.

What's in a vitamin B complex?

A vitamin B complex covers eight vitamins, and its benefits come from how they work together. They share one trait: in your body they act as helpers, called coenzymes, for many metabolic reactions.

  • B1Thiamin
  • B2Riboflavin
  • B3Niacin
  • B5Pantothenic acid
  • B6Pyridoxine
  • B7Biotin
  • B9Folate
  • B12Cobalamin

A review by David Kennedy points out that research has mostly looked at folate, B12 and B6. The other B vitamins have received far less attention.[1] Keep that in mind when you read big promises about vitamin B complex benefits.

Vitamin B complex benefits for energy and tiredness

Your body converts food into energy all day long, and a vitamin B complex is part of that process. A review by Tardy and colleagues, which summarises the existing research, concludes that every B vitamin except folate takes part in at least one step of cellular energy production.[2] Riboflavin (vitamin B2), for example, is a building block of helper molecules that your cells use to release energy from food. These steps build on each other, so a shortfall in a single B vitamin can slow the whole process down.[2]

When a B vitamin is lacking, tiredness and weakness can follow. The authors describe this for B12, B6 and folate.[2] Their conclusion: supplementing vitamins and minerals is highly likely to bring benefits for mental and physical tiredness, with the clearest effects when the body is not getting enough.[2]

Authorised statement: Vitamins B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12 contribute to normal energy metabolism and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. The same wording appears for Glow25 Energy.

Vitamin B complex benefits for nerves and focus

Vitamin B complex benefits reach the brain and nerves too. Kennedy describes the B vitamins as helpers in many neurochemical reactions.[1]

The authorised statement is: vitamins B2, B3, B6 and B12 contribute to normal nervous system function.

The research on thinking and memory is mixed. Kennedy explains that trials with folate, B12 and B6 on cognition and heart health were largely equivocal, which he links partly to differences in study design and participants.[1] In his view, looking at the whole B group is the better approach than looking at a small selection of vitamins.

Focus depends on many things, including sleep, stress and breaks. For everyday tips, read Boost your concentration: What your body and mind really need.

What trials with a vitamin B complex show

Most research looks at single B vitamins. Two trials tested a whole B complex in healthy adults: one on endurance, one on stress and tiredness.

B complex and endurance (2023)

In this randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial, 32 healthy adults aged 20 to 30 took a B vitamin complex or a placebo for 28 days. After a 14-day break, they switched. In the B complex phase, time to exhaustion on a running test rose from 12.59 to 15.82 minutes. In the placebo phase, it stayed the same. After exercise, two blood markers linked to fatigue, lactate and ammonia, were lower and recovered faster.[3]

Important context: The product also contained vitamin E, inositol, calcium and taurine, so the effect cannot be traced back to a single ingredient. The trial was small and co-funded by the product's manufacturer.[3]

B complex, stress and tiredness (2010)

In this placebo-controlled trial, 215 healthy men aged 30 to 55 in full-time work took a supplement with B vitamins, vitamin C and minerals, or a placebo, for 33 days. The men on the supplement felt less stressed, reported better well-being and more vigour, and felt less mentally tired. They also made more correct answers in a calculation task. Tests of attention and memory, and a rating of how energetic they felt at the end, showed no difference.[4]

Important context: The supplement also contained vitamin C and minerals, and its manufacturer sponsored the trial.[4]

Both trials tested different products in different amounts, so the results cannot be transferred directly to Glow25 Energy.

Our take: in both trials, a B complex made a measurable difference – to how far people ran, and to how stressed and tired they felt.

Vitamin B complex benefits in Glow25 Energy: the five B vitamins

Glow25 Energy contains five of the eight B vitamins. Tap a vitamin to see which form is used and which statement is authorised for it.

Vitamin B2 (riboflavin)

Included as sodium riboflavin-5′-phosphate. A review describes riboflavin as a building block of helper molecules, called coenzymes, that your cells use to release energy from food.[2]

Authorised: contributes to normal energy metabolism, to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and to normal nervous system function.

Vitamin B3 (niacin)

Included as nicotinamide. Niacin is one of the B vitamins whose active forms act as essential helpers in the energy production of your cells.[1]

Authorised: contributes to normal energy metabolism, to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and to normal nervous system function.

Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid)

Included as calcium D-pantothenate. Pantothenic acid is one of the B vitamins whose active forms act as essential helpers in the energy production of your cells.[1]

Authorised: contributes to normal energy metabolism and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine)

Included as pyridoxine hydrochloride. A shortfall in vitamin B6 is linked to weakness and tiredness.[2]

Authorised: contributes to normal energy metabolism, to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to normal nervous system function and to the regulation of hormonal activity.

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin)

Included as cyanocobalamin. A shortfall in vitamin B12 is linked to reduced energy and exercise tolerance, together with fatigue.[2] For more on B12, signs of a shortfall and risk groups, read Always Tired? What a B12 Deficiency Could Mean.

Authorised: contributes to normal energy metabolism, to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and to normal nervous system function.

You can find the amount of each B vitamin in the nutrition table on the Glow25 Energy product page.

Four common mix-ups about B vitamins

A lot is written about vitamin B complex benefits online. Here are four ideas we see often and what is actually backed up.

Mix-up

"I'm tired, so I must lack B vitamins."

Reality: Tiredness has many causes, such as sleep and stress. Signs of a shortfall are vague, and a blood test is the reliable way to find out. More in our B12 guide.

Mix-up

"More is always better."

Reality: Many studies used amounts far above daily needs, so they do not tell you what suits you.[2] Very high amounts of vitamin B6, around 1 g a day, can harm the nerves, while recommended intakes are in the mg range.[2]

Mix-up

"A B complex works like a shot of caffeine."

Reality: The authorised statement is that certain B vitamins contribute to normal energy metabolism. That is different from a stimulant. Glow25 Energy contains no caffeine.

Mix-up

"A supplement can replace a good diet."

Reality: Food supplements are no substitute for a balanced and varied diet. They can complement it.

Who might want to look closer

Not everyone needs a vitamin B complex supplement. According to our B12 guide, these situations deserve a closer look:

  • a vegan or vegetarian diet, especially for vitamin B12
  • age around 65 and older
  • digestive conditions or past stomach surgery
  • certain medications
  • pregnancy and breastfeeding

Your doctor is the best person to tell you whether a vitamin B complex fits, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a health condition.

How Glow25 Energy fits into your day

Glow25 Energy is a powder with five B vitamins: B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12. You stir it into water and drink it. It tastes of green tea with a fruity note. Besides the B vitamins, it contains creatine monohydrate and mango leaf extract.

Creatine has its own authorised statements, for example on physical performance during short, high-intensity exercise. You will find all details and usage notes on the product page, so please check them there.

Vitamin B complex benefits: your questions answered

Can you take vitamin B complex every day?

That depends on the product, so follow the serving instructions on the pack and do not exceed them. If you take other supplements or medication, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your doctor first.

Is vitamin B12 or a vitamin B complex better?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. B vitamins work closely together in metabolism, and one review argues for looking at the whole group, but that is the author's view.[1] If a single deficiency such as B12 has been confirmed by a blood test, your doctor decides what makes sense.

What are the symptoms of a lack of B vitamins?

Signs are vague, for example tiredness, tingling in the fingers or trouble concentrating, and they can have many other causes. A blood test is the reliable way to find out. Read more in Always Tired? What a B12 Deficiency Could Mean.

Who should take vitamin B supplements?

Not everyone needs one. People who may want to look closer include those on vegan or vegetarian diets, adults around 65 and older, people with digestive conditions or past stomach surgery, people on certain medications, and people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor before you decide.

Can you take too many B vitamins?

Very high amounts of vitamin B6, around 1 g a day, can harm the nerves, while recommended intakes are in the mg range.[2] Do not stack several B vitamin products without checking, and ask your doctor if you are unsure.

Does vitamin B complex give you energy?

Vitamins B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12 contribute to normal energy metabolism and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. That is not the same as a stimulant effect. A review concludes that supplementing vitamins and minerals is highly likely to bring benefits for mental and physical tiredness, especially when the body is not getting enough.[2]

Does Glow25 Energy contain a full vitamin B complex?

Glow25 Energy contains five B vitamins: B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12. That means not all eight. It also contains creatine monohydrate and mango leaf extract.

The bottom line

A vitamin B complex is a team of eight vitamins that help your energy metabolism and nervous system do their normal work. Authorised statements exist for each of them. Research on single B vitamins in healthy people is still patchy, while trials with a whole B complex have shown benefits for endurance and for how stressed and tired people feel. A supplement never replaces a balanced diet. If you want five of these vitamins in one daily drink, take a look at Glow25 Energy.
